The taper is used to allow more 'leverage' (wedging action) (as is used on machinery equipment collets), i.e. The nut requires lower torque than would be required if the angle of the collet were greater. As such it doesn't take a lot of torque to hold the tool, bit in this case. Also, in regards to the collet itself, mine holds the router shank so well that I cannot remove the router bit by hand. I have to resort to gently tapping the router bit out with a 3/16' drift (punch).
