Volkswagen is a German automotive manufacturer that was founded in 1937 and is headquartered in Wolfsburg. It is the flagship brand of the Volkswagen Group, and stands as the largest automotive maker in the world.

The company sells its vehicles worldwide and is responsible for popular models like the Golf, Jetta, Beetle, Passat and Transporter. Volkswagen expanded their production line in the 1960s by adding four new Type 3 models, which included the Karmann Ghia. Volkswagen is also involved in motorsport; it started with Formula V in 1963, which consisted of cars built from easily available Beetle parts. Volkswagen also got involved in rallying and achieved great success throughout the years – including a dominant stint in the World Rally Championship. At Haynes, we have an extensive range of Volkswagen repair manuals available; each of which come equipped with step-by-step guidance and descriptive images. Our manuals have all the helpful information you need to conduct your own DIY engine repairs, services and upgrades.

This is the only reference I've found online where a comparison is given between the new 2.0t and outgoing 1.8t. It's a little vague but does seem to indicate the 2.0t performs better in terms of acceleration. This engine is a real gem to drive. The available power and torque at low speeds make each acceleration fun.

Even when you’re driving down the highway at a good clip, you can push the accelerator and feel the pull of the tireless power. We were given the chance to compare a Passat with the 1.8T and a Passat with the new engine—and the difference was noticeable. Regardless of speed, the new engine proved more impressive and more fuel efficient to boot! Here is some more info I found on 1.8t vs. When I first heard they were putting the 2.0t in the Passat I thought it was the 200hp version so as to address the under powered 1.8t. Too bad that's not the case We got the chance to drive in a pre-production Passat equipped with the new B-Cycle 2.0-liter turbo, and while it’s miles away from a barn-burner, it’s an incremental improvement over the 1.8-liter it replaces. The Passat is smoother off the line, less peaky, quieter, and max power arrives considerably earlier at 4,400 rpm rather than 6,200 rpm.

That said, the 1.8T did have a more pleasant zip to it, and the new engine feels less eager to rev. I like perky.maybe the perky will be in the GT model why not solve the whole thing and have driver mode settings. Would be VERY easy. Few more observations (most cost-cutting) I've noticed on the 2018s: -The nice analog clock on the dash is gone. It's been replaced by a garish-looking chrome 'Passat' logo.

2018

Not a good move, VW -Dual-zone Climatronic is gone from the S again. So the S had Climatronic in 2012, 2016, and 2017 model years. But it's had manual climate controls in 2013-2015 and again in 2018.I read somewhere that the R-Line was getting rear-seat vents like the SE and above. But the one 2018 R-Line I saw a picture of online didn't have them.On a positive note, the S now gets a power driver's seat which is a nice touch. I can totally see where VW is coming from by yanking dual zone climate control on the S model. After all it is a base model for a reason. I thought VW was being extra nice by giving the S the new upgraded 2.0 T engine and also added in a power driver seat for the 2018 model.

However, the Passenger seat is still a manual one in the S model. The power passenger seat still remains solely exclusive to the SEL models even for 2018 passats models. If you look at the 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2017 Passat S models you’ll notice that VW has never given their S models a power driver seat but things changed for 2018. Also the 2018 Passat S AND R-Line models comes blacked out no more chrome around the windows and none on the doors either but still on the rear bumper. They didn’t include chrome on the windows and doors in order to save a few bucks plain and simple. They most likely only kept the chrome on the bumper because as Daniel stated they would have needed to redo the bumper if they were to exclude the chrome since the chrome goes into the bumper. Also I just checked with my local dealer and confirmed that the 2018 Passat R-Line does have dual zone climate control so it was just yanked from the S trim Passat.

I did confirm however that the 2018 R-Line does NOT have Rear A/C vents continuing the trend like previous years. Don’t forget the 2018 Passat S went up in price compared to the 2017 Passat S. Also All the other Passat trims for 2018 went up in price.

The black trim looks so cheap.i dont even think its glossy, just black rubber like a cheap-ass car. And that analog clock replacement? Ay yai yai and replacing reef blue with ultra drab throat slitting tourmaline? '17 is the year to getThe chrome around windows is just missing on the 2018 Passat S and Passat R-Line.

However, you could always buy the chrome for the windows and install it. On the other hand, If you are getting the 2018 SE or higher chrome is still on the windows so no worries there.

Sucks they got rid of the analog clock on all trims for 2018, but I think if someone is going to VW today or anytime real soon the 2018 would be the better Passat to get due to the new 2.0 T engine. Personally I am happy with the chrome trim on the windows for my 17 r-line.

The black to me makes it look cheap, at least for the color I chose which was the charcoal color. If it was a white or black color, it will probably look decent. Removing the analog clock from the vents looks really cheap with the word Passat. Lol know getting acc though is a pretty big upgrade in my opinion. Other than that the 17 is just fine. I can't imagine the 2.0t being that much better vs 1.8t. From what I've read it still has the same turbo etc.

If it came with dsg, then that would be a different ball game. Personally I am happy with the chrome trim on the windows for my 17 r-line. The black to me makes it look cheap, at least for the color I chose which was the charcoal color.

First thing I would do is black out all the chrome. I hate the chrome and any other performance model you buy that's the first thing they do.

For instance the M-series and many others they charge extra for that so happy that it was included on the 18's already.lol. The clock to me was silly. Our TDi SEL had it and I always thought it looked cheesy/cheap. Not to mention you have a clock looking at you in the center cluster and on the radio right below the dash, so what's the point IMO.
