John Deere Js63 Owners Manual

  1. John Deere Js63 Repair Manual

From doing a little research, it looks like no free repair manuals are available from jd. I understand they guard their copyrights like they're family jewels!

I'm still having the problem with the right drive wheel. It wants to drag when I pull the mower backwards. Like the above post says, I have switched everything around between the two drive wheels time and again to no avail. Iv'e even adjusted the tranny, per the manual and still no change. It looks pretty simple but can't seem to find the problem.

All this started a couple of weeks ago when I replaced a rear drive wheel the plastic center had broken out of. I went to jd parts, and found the schematic and made sure I put it back together correctly, but I can't figure this one out. Any suggestions are appreciated, thanks, G-man. This sounds like the issue to me too. Deere uses the same gear for left and right side-you just flip it around. You could have one installed backwards.

Check that spring keys move freely and the channel for them is clean of dirt etc. There isnt much to go wrong with this desighn. If the gears are worn it can cause binding also but if you installed new plastic gears -we can rule that out. The proper orentation of the gears is as follows. Left side- snap ring-round washer that fits into spur gear. Right side snapring-spurgear-then washer that fits into spur gear. This gives correct drive direction of wheels.

In other words the spur gear washer faces out on the left and the right side the gear goes on with the washer side facing inside. Hope this helps. Echoman, yes I switched both spur gears around, thinking that might be the case, but with the same results. I have tried every combination I can think of, but the right wheel is the one that won't freewheel when pulling the mower backwards. I feel it's something simple but it feels like something is binding.

I even called tuff torque and they said it was something wrong with the wheel or related brackets, not the transmission. If you pull the mower backwards and keep the right wheel stationery, the left wheel rolls as smooth as glass. If you keep the left wheel stationary, the right wheel slides and won't roll. Hope you guys can help me figure this one out! The left wheel is the new one I bought,i'm wondering if I need to buy another new wheel to fix it. Echoman and Lawnboy dan, thanks for the helpful posts.

Lawnboy dan, your post this morning cleared it all up! I had the recess on both spur gears to the inside and when I turned the left spur gear to the outside and placed the washer into the recessed area everything works as it should! I have owned this mower for 12 years but was thinking it might be time for a new one until you guys came to the rescue.

Echoman, I have been following your thread on your SE and I might have to start looking for one for myself. Thanks again for the help, G-man. Well echo you know not to put the spur gears on backwards now-lol. Glad the js63 is fixed! Great mowers for the $ you would be hard pressed to find anything else that offers this much mower for the $. I have 2 and use them at work a lot.

Of course deere dosnt offer this model anylonger and sadly have jumped on the personal pace band wagon. I sence my blood pressure rising just thinking about personal pace. Speaking of tough tork trans-i have NEVER had nor seen one fail!

Usually its the clutch/ declutch mecanism that gets stuck and people assume the trans is broken inside when all thats wrong is the top of the trans needs cleaning off. This is covered in the deere owners manual but often overlooked. I actually just came back in from checking out my trans repacking job. I wanting to make sure the clutch engaged right in relation to the gears and made sure I had all the gears/cable adjusted correctly before I went any further. I do need new spurs and final wheel drive gears as the left side plastic drive is worn down alot, allowing the wheel to slip occasionally.

Just really need new wheels and gears all the way around. You're right though Dan. These Tuff Torqs hold up well! This one I just pulled apart just needed some fresher grease.

Wasn't too low or dried up yet, but due for service after 22 years or so. The gears sets had absolutely no visible signs of wear or metal shavings in the grease, just like my 3 speed M's.

Engineered very well, just a total PAIN IN THE RUMPESS to service!

To lock caster wheels, push mower forward on an uneven surface, such as your yard. Lock caster wheels when cutting on slope, cutting on rough or bumpy ground, or pulling mower backwards away from wall or out of narrow space. To lock caster wheels: 1.

Push mower forward on an uneven surface. Pull lever (A) backward to lock position (B). To unlock caster wheels: 1. Push lever (A) forward to unlock position (C) Adjusting Cutting Height c CAUTION: Avoid injury! Rotating blades are dangerous and can cut fingers and toes.

Stop engine and wait for blade to stop rotating before adjusting cutting height. NOTE: Adjust both levers to same height except for two lowest cutting heights (A and B on following chart). At two lowest cutting heights, raise rear lever one notch higher than front lever. This adjustment allows for increased air flow when side discharging, and provides a larger exit window for clippings when mulching. Begin at upper cutting height, then adjust downward as desired, to avoid scalping lawn with too low a setting.

C CAUTION: Avoid injury! To avoid injury from cutting blades: Stop engine before removing or installing discharge chute, grass catcher, or mulch plug or guard in place. Do not mow without discharge chute, grass catcher, or mulch plug or guard in place. Bag is subject to wear and deterioration. Check bag frequently, replace when necessary.

Use John Deere bag or equivalent to comply with safety specifications. Stop mower and wait for all moving parts to stop.
