This lesson is in four parts:. The organization of the nervous system, nervous tissue - anatomy. Neurons; physiology or the conduction of an action potential.

Central Nervous System Notes

The central nervous system. The peripheral nervous system Part 1 discusses the organization of the NS; lists the general functions, structural & functional classifications of the NS. Also gives an overview of the central and peripheral NS. As well as the anatomy of neurons and neuroglia.

Part 2 looks at the generation of a nerve impulse and its conduction from one neuron to another. Part 3 looks at the Brain and spinal cord or the CNS. Part 4 discusses the PNS, with a concentration on the cranial nerves.

Monday (1/9): Guest Speakers Amy and Emily (MCHS graduates 2016) talking about their JC experience. No homework or handouts. Wednesday (1/11): Notes-'Organization of the Nervous System.' 3 handouts: Concept Map, Neuron Label, and a Reading Guide.

We also watched a few video clips regarding the NS. Friday (1/13): Video lecture day! Notes-my 2nd video, this one on action potentials or what generates or is a thought. Just before my note video, we watched a college level 6' video on neuron structure (see it below.) After my notes, we watched Hank and crash course #2 on action potentials (see below) - and the last quick video animation (see below). The last half of class just working on 2 handouts; Cells of the N.S., and Nerve & Synapse Homework. Monday (1/16): No School. Wednesday (1/18): Watched 4 videos on neurons, received two papers, one called 'Reaction Time,' the other a two page paper called the 'Anatomy of a Synapse.'

Monday (1/23): Guest Speaker - John Weitzel (Albony Fire Dept.). Wednesday (1/25): Notes: The Brain (reading/homework assignment called Brain Dysfunction - see pages 251-253-see last slide of notes). Some video clips on the brain (see all below), Lab: Sheep Brain Dissection, two papers: Sheep Brain Dissection (3 pages), and a one page paper called Brain Worksheet. I have a lot of brain videos and each class may watch a different one. Friday (1/27): Notes: The Spinal Cord & Cranial Nerves. 2 handouts, one called spinal cord dissection, the other cranial nerve coloring.

We also watched a bunch of video clips (all can be seen below.). Monday (1/30): Only 1 handout, a cross-word puzzle on the N.S. We watched a part of the documentary on the brain (can see below.) Taking notes on this documentary can be used as extra credit. Wednesday (2/1): Notes: Mostly review of the cranial nerves w/just a bit on the ANS.

Continued to watch the The Human Brain video, and got two handouts: a four page memory lab, and a nerve review sheet. Friday (2/3): Almost finished 'The Human Brain,' did the 2-Pt. Touch test lab, and got a review sheet for next Wednesday's test. Also watched Hank's video on the ANS.

Monday (2/6): Optical Illusion Presentation. Test on the NS is next class. Wednesday (2/8): Watched the video 'Pushing the Limits: Sensation,' played two KaHoot Games, then took the partner test on the Nervous System. This ends the unit, so go to the next unit on the Senses.

The central nervous system receives and processes information from the senses. The brain and the spinal cord make up the central nervous system. Both organs lie in a fluid called the cerebrospinal fluid, which cushions and nourishes the brain.

The blood-brain barrier protects the cerebrospinal fluid by blocking many drugs and toxins. This barrier is a membrane that lets some substances from the blood into the brain but keeps out others. The spinal cord connects the brain to the rest of the body. It runs from the brain down to the small of the back and is responsible for spinal reflexes, which are automatic behaviors that require no input from the brain. The spinal cord also sends messages from the brain to the other parts of the body and from those parts back to the brain. The brain is the main organ in the nervous system. It integrates information from the senses and coordinates the body’s activities.

It allows people to remember their childhoods, plan the future, create term papers and works of art, talk to friends, and have bizarre dreams. Different parts of the brain do different things. Damage to the Spinal Cord The spinal cord is what connects the brain and body, and it is protected by the bones in the spinal column. Injuries to the spinal cord can cause serious problems, such as paralysis. Even relatively minor damage to the spinal cord can cause loss of feeling in parts of the body, impaired organ function, and loss of muscular control. Though spinal cord injuries are usually permanent, current research into regenerated axons and stem cells offers hope that one day these injuries may be treated successfully.
